Small Gardens, Big Yields with Bulk Heirloom Seeds
June 23rd, 2011Bulk heirloom seeds are a wonderful investment in the most important household asset – a reliable supply of good, healthy food. They can be found for sale through the internet, or by way of widely distributed seed catalogs. On some occasions free samples of bulk heirloom seeds can be obtained from gardening clubs and even some civic organizations.
Genetically modified vegetables and fruits are commonplace, and that may be one of the reasons why the overpriced food in your grocery produce aisle just doesn’t taste like what you remember from the dinner table of your childhood. Real food is not only better for you, it also tastes better.
Many “locavores” and “foodies” in big cities are starting to grow much of what winds up on their tables. Some high-end restaurants maintain chef’s gardens. All of this attests to the quality and desirability of food grown from heirloom-quality seeds. But there are tremendously practical reasons for using heirloom seeds, as well. For one thing, they can be gathered after harvest and re-used, so they help create self-sustaining gardens. For another, they tend to produce much better-tasting, healthier fruits and vegetables, which means that more will be eaten and less thrown out (although in any proper garden, food is never “wasted,” but merely recycled as compost).
Even in urban locales, an increasing number of are growing “prepper” gardens. Recent catastrophes have illustrated, in memorable and tragic fashion, the need for people to develop at least a modest capacity for self-sufficiency.
Getting started on organic gardening has never been easier – or more important. If you buy produce at a farmer’s market, ask for some tips from the vendors; they’ll most likely be eager to share.
There are many approaches one can follow in starting a garden. It’s important to take climate and soil type into account. There are few better beginning staple foods than beans, which grow just about everywhere, easy to prepare, and very high in nutritional content. Potatoes are likewise suitable to cultivate just about everywhere. Melons and squash are good complimentary selections as well. Tomatoes and carrots are popular for a reason, as well.
